Find a route to care

Where does finding care start?

Start with a way to check the person offering care. A local name, a neat waiting room, or an easy checkout is not the answer you are looking for.

Prices and rules can change. Open ‘Check the source’ below each section to find the date for its facts.

An office visit

When visiting a clinic in person, get the name of whoever will assess you and whoever takes responsibility for the treatment plan. Get names before trying to compare the promises in the advertising.

Florida has a free state search for a health professional’s license and public discipline records.

Care over a screen

Telehealth is contact with a clinician (a doctor or other health professional) at a distance, using video, a phone call, or another remote exchange.

For ordinary care by phone or video while you are in Florida, check for a Florida license or Florida’s out-of-state telehealth registration. Registration is the state’s record allowing a health professional from another state to give remote care here.

A license covering several states may also count through a compact, an agreement between states that Florida has joined.

If the practice uses that route, ask for the agreement’s name and the person’s license type. Ask the Florida board for that profession to confirm that it covers care here.

The practice record is a separate check

Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) licenses many clinics. Some practices do not need this clinic license because they meet an exception in the law.

One exception covers an office wholly owned and directly supervised by its doctors. The law also allows certain family members to share ownership.

Ask the office which exception it uses, who owns it, and who supervises it. Ask AHCA to help check that answer.

A missing AHCA entry therefore does not, on its own, show that a practice is breaking the law.

Ask how the visit could end

Would the assessment lead to a different treatment, another examination, or no prescription? Ask that before signing up. Keep your health question at the center of the conversation.

Bring a name back to the state record

Write down the clinician’s full name and license type. Check the record yourself, then ask the practice to explain anything that does not match.
