Check the person’s license

Check a name in Florida’s records.

A license check starts with an actual person’s name. Ask who will assess you, not just who appears on the front of the website.

Prices and rules can change. Open ‘Check the source’ below each section to find the date for its facts.

Use the state’s own search

The Florida Department of Health offers free license checks, personal profiles, and discipline records. Discipline means action taken against a license. Doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists are included.

Choose the person’s profession and match the full name. Compare the record with what the practice told you.

Different titles have different boards

Florida’s Board of Medicine licenses medical doctors. A DO is another type of licensed doctor. DO stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, the name of that doctor’s title. Florida licenses these doctors through its Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

DO names a type of doctor, rather than a type of injection. Ask the doctor which profession to choose in the state search.

Nurses and nurse practitioners come under the Board of Nursing. The Board of Pharmacy handles pharmacists and pharmacies.

A clean record has a limit

The absence of public action against a license does not promise good care.

Use the record to check what it actually shows. Then ask how the clinician (a doctor or other health professional) makes treatment decisions and handles questions.

Remote registration is its own route

Florida publishes records of out-of-state clinicians registered for telehealth, or care given remotely. That route is separate from a full Florida license.

Ask which route the clinician uses to treat people sitting in Florida. A home-state license alone does not answer that question.

Keep the result with the name

Save the record you checked and the name you were given. If a different clinician takes over, start the name check again.
